India celebrates National Energy Conservation Day on December 14th every year. Since the Energy Conservation Act was enforced by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) in 2001, the day has been celebrated to raise awareness of limiting energy loss.
What is Energy Conservation?
Energy conservation means using less energy, either by avoiding unnecessary use or by making power consumption more efficient. Today, as we celebrate the 21st National Energy Conservation Day, we take a look at how the logistics and supply chain industry is bringing energy efficiency to their operations.
An important part of our economy, logistics efficiently manages the flow of materials and products between various nodes operating in multiple systems. The process of moving and storing goods consumes considerable energy resources and emits greenhouse gases that harm the environment.
This requires the industry to become more energy efficient. It refers to energy use in activities such as transportation and warehousing as a measure of performance. What we are observing now is that the industry is being asked to demonstrate that it is acting in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.
In the early days, it was enough for companies to present a corporate social responsibility (CSR) report and detail what they had done in the past year, but now the expectations have increased. The logistics and supply chain industry will have to scrutinize their own operations as consumers become more cautious not only about what they buy, but also about their sources. They want to know that not only the products but also the stories behind them are eco-friendly and sustainable.
This means that companies are being asked to strike the right balance between delivering the right product (high quality) and logistical performance for sustainability. It is difficult.
The good news, however, is that companies are making small steps towards achieving sustainability and energy efficiency. Devising ways to be more energy efficient, whether it’s replacing a light bulb or using a more fuel-efficient truck, requires actions that benefit the environment while reducing costs.
Ayesha Katgara – Head of Corporate Strategy at Jeena & Company “Gina understands the seriousness of saving energy and we have several high-impact initiatives in the pipeline that we will be covering one by one in the coming days. prevent misuse of electricity by installing a We are working to save some money. From an industry perspective, we have completely stopped printing bills of lading and are instead offering our customers an electronic bill of lading (BL) on our customer portal.”
To save energy, companies like UPS, Amazon, FedEx, and DHL are already switching to alternative fuels and employing hybrid and fully electric vehicles to run their business.
“Energy conservation efforts should not be made solely by governments. We should incorporate micro-level practices to make a difference on the larger canvas,” says Ayesha.
Inculcating programs that use alternative energy sources to reduce energy consumption is good for the environment and good for business. Companies that understand the importance of energy conservation also consider environmentally friendly policies as a competitive advantage. This puts logistics companies in a stronger position not only with their customers but also with their suppliers, which of course benefits the environment.
