When last seen in public just over a month ago, Republican Paul DeGroot has foiled a vigorous campaign with CD-11.
The result had to be a little disappointing. DeGroot lost to his Mikie Sherrill by 19 points.
It’s a funny thing about politics, but an election loss could be the springboard for future campaigns.
like what?
Rumors echoing in Republican politics in Morris County may cause DeGroot to seek state or county office.
He lives in Montville, which makes him an LD-26. Although this is a newly built district, it remains a very strong Republican Party.
The new LD-26 incumbents are Senator Joseph Penacchio and Congressmen Brian Bergen and Jay Webber. They have already issued press releases touting support from party leaders and members of county committees.
This primary is still about six months away, but things aren’t as far off as you think.
Morris County’s Republican convention is in early March.
Obviously, the incumbent is trying to get as much support as possible and scare off the challenger.
Nonetheless, former MP BettyLou DeCroce, who lost her seat in 2021, is widely expected to run again.
But will she run with someone else?
That’s where DeGroot’s name comes in.
In addition, he has also been mentioned as a likely candidate for commissioner of Morris County, where current board member Taihoon Seren is incumbent.
Selene, too, has overstated her support from committee members and other Republicans.
DeGroot vs Selen is like the second game of a doubleheader. They clashed over CD-11’s nominations last spring, but never went head-to-head.
Selene had CD-11 approval from the county Republican committee, but lost the primary to DeGroot in a five-man election. DeGroot’s win was propelled by his big victory in Passaic County in the district. DeGroot is a native of Clifton and was a former assistant prosecutor for Passaic County.
Of course, DeGroot’s ties to Passaic didn’t help him in Morris’ competition for Commissioner.
Asked about all this, DeGroot said:
“I sincerely appreciate the support I have received from within the Republican Party and the interest expressed in my plans for the future.
“I look forward to helping the people of New Jersey as our party grows in size and power.
how would you translate that?
how is it:
“I’m ready to run again, but I don’t know yet what position I’ll be running.”
