The Volkswagen Group’s Aurangabad facility has transitioned to 100% ‘green’ energy. With this, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India (SAVWIPL) has taken an important step towards fulfilling the group’s goTOzero mission. This facility has received a Green Energy Certificate from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL).
In early 2018, SAVWIPL’s Aurangabad factory increased its capacity for ‘green’ energy use and commissioned a 980 kWp rooftop solar power plant to meet 40% of its annual energy demand.
By replacing the external energy supply with renewable energy from MSEDCL, SAVWIPL’s Aurangabad plant became the first automotive facility in Aurangabad to be certified as a Green Energy Plant by MSEDCL.
According to Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, this ‘green’ energy transition will allow the Aurangabad plant to achieve an annual CO2 reduction of around 48%.
Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO of Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, said: It is also the basis of our manufacturing process. At the Volkswagen Group, “goTOzero” is not only a roadmap for effective climate protection, but also an essential strategic initiative towards sustainable mobility.
Arora adds: We are very proud to have achieved 100% green energy certification for our Aurangabad facility well ahead of our target date. ”
As part of its ‘goTOzero’ mission, the Volkswagen Group aims to become a carbon neutral company by 2050. The Group consistently focuses on the goal of carbon neutrality throughout its global supply chain and product lifecycle.
