Fierce competition among North Marion high and middle school staff proved winners for families in need

Photo credit: YADIRA ROMERO NAVARRO - High and middle school teams (and Husky mascots) pose in celebration of a successful basketball fundraiser for families in need on November 29 .The staff of North Marion High School defeated the staff of North Marion Middle School, 61-57, in a basketball game on November 29.

But since the purpose of the game was not to compete, but to raise funds for needy families, everyone was a winner, and the event certainly delivered on that.

The fundraiser brought in $296 to support Family Outreach Advocate Rafael Pelaez’s annual effort to provide North Marion families with food and gifts for the holidays.

“This game was great and a lot of fun. I really enjoyed it,” said Pelaez. “It was great to have students and staff involved in helping families in need, but it was also great to have fun with everyone. Maintenance, janitors, security guards, administrators, teachers, everyone participated. I really want to thank everyone for their support.”

Pelaez also said the student organizers were particularly happy with all the support. Hosted by the Associated Student Body (ASB), this basketball fundraiser is one in a series of community events spearheaded by ASB students.

ASB Vice President Kenley Dubrava said, “We encourage everyone to support us as our efforts have a direct impact on our communities and others.

Community members were thrilled with the latest ASB event.

NMSD Board of Education Director Bill Graup, who participated in last week’s fundraiser, said, “It’s been very positive for students and staff to work together to raise money to help families in need in our communities. It’s an experience.

High school teacher Sarah Bailey also enjoyed the event, which was held in Gymnasium 1 at North Marion High School.

“It’s fun when the FUNdraiser is fun,” says Bailey. “I was impressed that I made just under $300 that night. Thank you to my team for sharing the court and the fun.”

There’s still time to help local families! If you would like to help Pelaez with his fundraising efforts, please contact him. This email address is being protected from spambots. JavaScript must be enabled to view. The present is until Friday. December 9th.

ASB’s next event is a week-long fundraiser in February. Wear red to support the effort and look for opportunities to purchase items from ASB. All proceeds will go to the American Heart Association, an international non-profit organization that fights heart disease and stroke. The American Heart Association has chapters in Oregon and southwestern Washington. For more information, visit heart.org/en/affiliates/oregon-local.
