Mattia Chowdhury, a member of the Awami League caucus, is likely to become deputy speaker of the House of Commons.
The post of deputy leader became vacant after Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury’s death on September 11.
Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, a former caucus member of the ruling AL, was appointed deputy speaker of the 11th parliament for the third consecutive term.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has hinted today that Mattia will become the next Vice-President of the House of Commons.
The Prime Minister said this while delivering a speech marking the Begum Rokeya Day-2022 and Begum Rokeya Padak-2022 distribution ceremonies at the Osmani Memorial Hall in the capital.
“Unfortunately Sieda Sajeda Choudhury, Deputy Speaker of the House, passed away a few days ago, but we will fill the void with a woman,” Hasina, who is also the Speaker of the House, said.
The names of AL veteran leaders such as Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed, Matia Chowdhury and Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim were being discussed for the post after Sajeda’s death.
Sherpur-2’s MP Matia was a former agriculture minister during the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government from 1996 and during the 2009 government.
