MANILA, PHILIPPINES — Manila Doctors Hospital (MDH) commemorates the legacy of Dr. George SK Thai, Chairman of Metrobank Group, on November 22, 2022, with a new building as Dr. George SK Thai Medical Tower. A dedication ceremony was held.
MDH’s newest tower opened in 2016 and is the realization of Dr. Ty’s dream and vision for MDH. Dr. Ty envisioned this hospital becoming one of the top hospitals in the country. It provides safe, comprehensive and accessible health care for those who need it. The new tower has allowed MDH to expand its services and open new specialty centers such as the Cancer Institute, one of his in the hospital’s Centers of Excellence. We offer more diagnostic services through high-tech equipment installed in new departments and laboratories and a one-stop-shop wellness hub. With more space for both doctors and patients, MDH has treated more than 1 million outpatients and her 50,000 inpatients with this new tower.
A ceremony held in the lobby of the Dr. George SK Ty Medical Tower brought together key partners who helped make the dream a reality. It was Mary Tye, widow of the late Dr. Tye and trustee of the Metrobank Foundation, who released the marker bearing Dr. Tye’s name. Anjanette Ty-Dy Buncio, Chairman of the Board of Manila Medical Services Inc. Aniceto Sobrepeña, MBFI President and MMSI Board Vice-President. Arlene Ledesma, MDH President. In his opening remarks, Sobrepeña recalled Dr. Ty’s passion for building new towers. He was on site almost every week to inspect and monitor construction progress and make adjustments as needed. “He wanted a place that did more than provide treatment and prevention of serious illnesses. He envisioned a leading wellness center in the country.”
Ty-Dy Buncio remembered his father’s true love for the hospital as he shared his family’s reaction. Dr. Ty said that despite being frail at the time, he drove by the hospital almost every day before returning home and looked lovingly at the building’s entrance. .
She also shared a photo that rekindled memories of Dr. Ty, not only showing his overwhelming presence and dynamism, but also reflecting his enthusiasm, joy, gratitude and generosity. . “It is our family’s very hope that the MDH community will continue to pursue my father’s legacy.”
She added that this legacy goes beyond names and buildings. It is about touching life and making a difference.”
To conclude the program, Ledesma thanked the late group president for his generosity to MDH. “It was the Filipino people who benefited from Dr. Tai’s dream come true.”
She thanked Dr. Ty for helping MDH to become one of the top hospitals in the country and continue to do so. To advance his dream and provide quality healthcare to her MDH community, she remains true to her promise to provide safe and accessible healthcare for all. The naming ceremony took place on the eve of Dr. Ty’s fourth anniversary and was part of MBFI and MDH’s efforts to commemorate him. Dr. Ty passed away on November 23, 2018 at the age of 86.
