Reutlingen, 28 November 2022 — The KION Group strengthens its position in Reutlingen and plans to expand its factory. The intralogistics group has invested his double-digit million euros in this project. “By expanding our production by about 60%, we are sending an important message about the future.” said Rob Smith, CEO of KION GROUP AG. It will further strengthen our strong position as a leading intralogistics provider.”
The Mittelstadt-based subsidiary KION Warehouse Systems (KWS) is the group’s competence center for the development and production of system technology vehicles under the KION brand. Volker Bonk, Managing Director of KION Warehouse Systems, together with Thomas Keck, Mayor of Reutlingen, Roland Wintzen, Deputy Mayor for Finance and Economic Affairs and Wilhelm Haug, District Mayor of Mittelstadt, discusses the current plan. announced the situation.・On-site meeting.
The plan is to relocate the bypass road to the plant, expand the existing production building, and expand the production space to the south. KWS will purchase the forest area currently owned by the city of Reutlingen. This solution significantly improves in-house production processes with minimal additional space. Overall, the expansion includes at least 2600 square meters, of which 2200 is for the expansion of the production hall. There are also plans for major investments in existing facilities and machinery, as well as general modernization of processes on site. Subject to the approval of the relevant authorities, construction is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2023, with the expanded production facilities scheduled to begin operations in 2025.
“KION’s location policy and corporate strategy are both flexible and reliable. With this project, the intralogistics group once again sends a positive signal regarding the economy, the labor market and especially Reutlingen as a business location.” We do,” said Thomas Keck, Mayor of Reutlingen.
Over 400 jobs protected by Reutlingen
Increased production capacity will also impact on-site employment. The workforce has grown from 250 he in 2010 to more than 400 he today. Currently about 130 of these KWS employees come from the city of Reutlingen and 280 from the Reutlingen district. The planned expansion will protect 400 existing jobs and enable the creation of new ones.
KWS Managing Director Volker Bonk said: The planned investment makes one thing clear, he says. This expansion will provide even more flexibility and allow KWS to remain optimally positioned in the dynamic intralogistics market for years to come. “
The development planning process must be completed and the land use plan changed in order to meet legal planning requirements for the factory’s southward expansion. The development plan is now on the agenda of the Mittelstadt district council on November 28, 2022. KWS is already in close consultation with relevant agencies in the city.
The planned expansion will also be implemented in strict compliance with nature conservation regulations. As part of this requirement, external areas that provide the necessary forestry and conservation compensation must be found during the development planning process. In preparation for this, suitable reforestation sites have already been identified in the urban area of Reutlingen. In particular, reforestation is being considered in the ‘Hinterer Zaun’ and ‘Eichwäldle’ districts of the Reutlingen district and the ‘Oberer Auchtert’ district of the Mittelstadt district.
