    IT Ministry Conducts Quarterly Compliance Audit of Social Media Companies

    New Delhi, August 4th: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) will now conduct quarterly compliance audits of social media companies, official sources said on Thursday.

    Social media platforms are now required to disclose their compliance with the IT Regulation 2021 on a monthly basis and disclose the actions they have taken in response to various complaints, news agency PTI reports.

    “Meity now has a mechanism in place to audit the compliance of social media intermediaries under IT regulations on a quarterly basis. We will verify whether they are doing so and whether their behavior is appropriate.It is in sync with the rules that have been laid out,” the source told PTI.

    To strengthen the turf of social media platforms, the government has proposed setting up an appeals panel with the power to overturn decisions made by social media companies on any complaints. A public consultation process on the proposed rule was put together by the IT Department.
