As part of the Pork Power: Partnering to Fight Hunger in Illinois campaign, the Illinois Pork Producers Association has donated nearly one million pounds of pork to food banks since 2008.
Today, Pork Power is on its way to producing nearly 1 million pounds (over 3.3 million servings) of pork for families across Illinois. Commodity groups that partner with farmers have worked together to donate to the program throughout the year to feed those in need.
IPPA Incoming President Chad Leman recently traveled to Bloomington, Illinois with Dale Howdrich, Illinois Corn Marketing Board Director, and staff members of the Illinois Pork Growers Association, Illinois Corn Growers Association, and Illinois Soybean Association. I made a donation to a Midwest food bank. His 11,000 pounds of pork processed by Steidinger Foods. Located in Bloomington-Normal, Midwest Food Bank serves nearly 500 agency partners across his 50 counties in central and eastern Illinois.
“As farmers, we are passionate about giving back to our communities, feeding those in need, and expanding our reach of pork, a healthy source of protein,” Leman said. says Mr. “The Polk Power program has made all of this possible and we are very much hopeful that we will continue on our path to achieving our £1 million donation target.”
“Pork Power is an important project that allows farmers in Illinois to help starving families get the protein they need,” said Jim Reed, DeLand’s IL Corn Chairman and Farmer. “The food banks we serve are thrilled to receive protein donations.IL Corn and the corn farmers we serve are on such an important mission. This program is a great opportunity to give back to the community, work together, and eat more pork.”
“Each year our partnership with IL Corn and IL Pork through our Pork Power Program proves invaluable to us. If we can support the bank, it will benefit everyone involved.” Scott Gaffner, ISA at large Director and Market Development Committee Chair. “Together we feed and fuel the world.”
Towards the end of each year, IPPA converts the remaining funds into ground pork and distributes it to local food banks throughout the state. Over 11,000 pounds of pork were donated to Midwest Food Bank today as part of our year-end giving campaign, bringing us well closer to our goal of 1 million pounds of pork.
Thank you IPPA sponser: Illinois Corn Marketing Commission, Illinois Soybean Association, competitive finance, farm welding, Illinois Meat Processors Association and Knox County pork producer.
IPPA also encourages pig farmers to participate in the program by covering the cost of processing donated pigs. Farmers can visit her IPPA site to learn more about the donation process. IPPA says the program would not be possible without the help of merchandise partners, local packers and converters statewide, and those who purchased the themed t-shirts that benefited the program.
