Recent price drop of 4.0% of Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) shares may have disappointed insiders who bought US$4.9 million worth of shares at an average price of US$32.12 over the past 12 months. Insiders invest in hopes that their money will grow in value over time. However, as a result of recent losses, their initial investment is now only US$4.3 million, which is not what they expected.
While we do not believe that shareholders should simply follow insider trading, we believe it is perfectly logical to monitor insider behavior.

Intel Insider Trading in the Past Year
We can see that last year, the largest insider purchase was a share worth US$1.5 million by Rip Buttan director, at approximately US$29.49 per share. This means that the insider wanted to buy the stock even though the stock was higher than his US$28.24 (recent price). It’s very likely that they regret the purchase, but they’re more likely to be bullish on the company. Generally speaking, if an insider buys a stock at a price higher than the current price, we know that the insider believes it is worth buying even at the higher price.

Insider Ownership
Looking at a company’s total insider shareholdings can help give an idea of whether they are aligned well with public shareholders. If an insider owns a sizeable amount of stock in a company, I think that’s a good sign. An Intel insider apparently owns his 0.05% of the company, which is worth about $61 million. While this is a strong level of insider ownership, it is not an outstanding level, but it is sufficient to indicate some alignment between management and minority shareholders.
